With many big companies rolling back DEI programs, many of us, especially college students who are dealing with limited budgets, are unsure of where to shop that still support the values of DEI that are also affordable. Here’s a list of some small businesses (both near SRU and online) to support in 2025!
Branded in Butler

I might be a little biased because CDR absolutely loves Branded in Butler, but this one is probably my favorite on this list. Branded in Butler has two locations: one in Butler, PA (about a 30 minute drive from SRU) and one in Kent, OH (about an hour drive from SRU), and they also offer online shopping through their website! Branded in Butler sells quality vintage clothing and shoes at affordable prices. If vintage clothing isn’t your thing, they have a sister store, Thrifted By Branded, that sells name brand clothes at affordable prices!
Inkwell Threads
Inkwell Threads is a woman-owned business that sells clothing and accessories online. Their products are all book and reading themed (which I love), but they are a little pricey ($62 for a crewneck). However, they host numerous give back days that donates the profits from that day to different causes supporting women, the LGBTQ+ community, and education. They also offer many products that donate a percentage of their profits to charity.
Jenny B’s Florals and Gifts
Jenny B's Florals and Gifts doesn’t have a website but be sure to stop by the next time you find yourself on Slippery Rock’s Main Street. They have floral and plant related products, but also body care items, candles, and gifts! The shop is a lot bigger than you might think, and their products are all affordable!
Grows on Main
Grows on Main is an adorable plant store in Butler (they also have locations in Zelienople, Etna, and an online store)! But they’re also so much more than a plant store. They have event spaces that you can book, a plant wholesale shop, plant bars, and accessories, all for a super reasonable price (I have a pair of earrings from Grows on Main and they were only $5!)
Sound and Circle
Sound and Circle sells a variety of paper products, including planners, address books, and notebooks. They have planners for just about everything (weekly, daily, grocery/meal, small business, and customization options) for reasonable prices. Their planners are perfect for students, and you can shop for them online!
Local Coffee Shops
Personally, my favorite coffee shops to support are always the local ones. They’re great to do homework in, and almost always have better drinks and food than chain coffee shops. Right by SRU’s campus, you can find Rooster's, which is an SRU favorite. If you haven’t been yet, I’d highly recommend it! Every drink I’ve tried has been amazing, and their food is super affordable and delicious! If you find yourself in Butler, or just want to try something new, stop by either Cumming's or Vintage Coffee House! I haven’t had a chance to try either of them yet, but I’ve heard a lot of great things about both of them from my friends!
