Mind Over Matter: 5 Ways to Be a Better You

Updated: Nov 3, 2020

Ever get in a “mood” & no matter how much you want to get out of it, you can’t? This personal entrapment can be one of the most frustrating things for not only you, but the people that are around you as well. I personally have undergone, witnessed, & coped with “moods” more times than I can count. Now, I want to share my 5 tips I’ve learned throughout the years on how to free yourself from this mental prison.

1. Good Nutrition

The first step to a better you & a happier life are the nutrients and vitamins that allow your body to do so. My go-to is a simple smoothie bowl (*as pictured*) that has all the necessary nutrients such as vitamins, minerals, protein, fiber, & antioxidants. The ingredients are listed below.

Ingredients:

- Frozen berry mix

- Frozen banana

- Almond milk

- Vanilla greek yogurt

- Vanilla protein powder

- Peanut butter

- Granola

- Coconut shavings

- Honey

2. Create Something

In order to free your mind from negativity, you need to open it to new perspectives, ideas, or things. Maybe this new “thing” is art for you! I know it certainly was for me. Art allowed me to express myself any way I wanted & worked as a personal therapeutic session for whatever I was going through (no matter how small or large). *Pictured is a pen & ink medium-based piece I created my freshman year of high school titled Roses*

3. Travel

Traveling allows an overcoming realization of just how beautiful & vast the world is. Personally, this is my favorite tip because it has made me realize the big picture of whatever circumstance I was trying to get away from. An adventure, no matter if that’s just around your hometown or thousands of miles away, will open your mind to the realization there is so much more in life to focus on than that momentary “mood” we all get caught up in. *Pictured is Racoon Creek State Park in Hookstown, PA*

4. Read

Reading is a popular escape I’m sure you have heard, & yet I am here to say it once again. There is nothing like getting cozy, opening a book, & becoming so entangled in the plot that you forget you live in the real-world! *Pictured is the book The Five People You Meet in Heaven by Mitch Albom*

5. Cherish

Many of us tend to get caught up in our school, careers, lives, etc. While all of this is important, they are not THE most important. Now, I am not currently lying on my death bed telling you that to cherish is indeed the most important thing of all, but I can be most certain that I will believe this when I am. As cheesy as it sound there is nothing better for a mental halt in happiness than to go back and cherish your foundation. Whether your foundation is family, friends, neighbors, or your pet goldfish, cherish them. *Pictured is my uncle & his soon-to-be wife in Stone Harbor, NJ*
